Lead Character Artist

Requirements:

  • A degree or at least 5 years professional production experience in lieu of qualifications.
  • Evidence of being a leader or role model, within their trade, at a team level and with the necessary management skills to run a team on a day-to-day basis.
  • Demonstrable history of:
  • Actively supporting art direction
  • Remaining faithful to a project’s art direction.
  • Evidence of a clear understanding of creating a wide range of photorealistic art for game engines.
  • A portfolio or reel that demonstrates the following:
  • Strong artistic background, with numerous examples of life drawing.
  • Heavy focus on photorealistic art, environments level design and lighting.
  • Clear understanding of the normal map creation process.
  • Strong ability to create photorealistic high poly models.
  • Clear understanding of efficient UV layout for low poly objects.
  • Keen eye for detail and realism.
  • Strong texturing skills.
  • An understanding of how game-play and real time issues can affect a Lead Artist’s work, or a willingness to learn, and the ability to develop techniques to compensate for such limitations.
  • At least 2-5 years of cinematic/games production experience, with 1–2 years of feature film production experience a big plus. 
  • Console experience, preferably Next Generation, like the PS2 and Xbox.
  • Sample pictures, or link to web pages, which demonstrate work.
  • The ability to create all kind of photorealistic game objects based on photo references or concept art.
  • Strong understanding of the impact of lighting in leveldesign.
  • The ability to create game ready assets that work well within the given technical limitations.
  • Demonstrate a consistently keen eye for detail.
  • Strong understanding of Adobe Photoshop, preferably with experience of Discreet 3D Studio Max.
  • The ability to manage and supervise an art team on a day-to-day basis and give artistic direction.
  • Willingness to relocate to Frankfurt, Germany.

Pluses:

  • A very strong understanding of:
  • Technical limitations of game engines.
  • Efficient low poly and UV layout techniques.
  • The game production process.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise art team on a large franchise.
  • Maintain the original vision of the game
  • As and when needed:
  • Ensure that all aspects of art pre-production are completed on a timely basis to a high standard.
  • Create style guides to guarantee the consistency of the game.
  • Define budgets for the given platforms.
  • Prototype new technologies on the given platforms.
  • Work together with our Research and Development department to improve workflow.
  • Define work processes together with the Art and Project Managers.
